As temperatures start to cool, the focus of lawn care changes. Proper watering, fertilizing and mowing in the fall can help ensure a beautiful lawn all year around.
Ace Hardware suggests homeowners take the following steps to set the stage for a lush, healthy lawn:
Mowing - Knowing how high to keep your grass is important all year. While you usually keep it a little longer in the summer, you will want to reduce the height to 2"-2.5" as the temperatures cool down. Any shorter and you may risk your lawn dying prematurely.
Watering - In a typical weather pattern, you should see rain increase as fall evolves. As a general rule of thumb, your lawn should require about an inch of water each week. Monitor your rainfall and only water as much as needed.
Fertilizing - Fertilizing in fall may not seem as necessary as in the spring, but it is just as important. Applying fertizlier sometime in September or October helps your lawn survive harsh winter damage allowing it to green up faster in the spring.
